Invitation S.jpg

Booklet for Hong Kong Biennale /

Friday, December 28th, 2007

The 24 pages / A3 size “newspaper” booklet is done for editing and graphic design. Now sending for print:

Kai Tak Laboratory

In Hong Kong, urban voids are turned into large scale commercial developments……… Kai Tak could follow this trend, but it would turn out to be nothing much………..it’s more about the system……….. not necessarily an architectural system. It will be an institution above the traditional concept of country………….more importantly, it will give Hong Kong a new position.

It’s a place for exchanging…………..we want to give Kai Tak back the function of a port………………..a new kind of urban situation where ships interact with the port…

Communism and Capitalism will come together as a part of the HK and SZ merge………………….. One country, one (new) system.

We will add something new……………………….something for the future…………………..Hong Kong is in crucial need to find new way to be competitive in the future. This definitely will challenge Hong Kong to test something that has never been examined anywhere else in the world.

Transportation Vehicle

In the discussion of the “City of Expiration and Regeneration” (CoER), there are two main opposing philosophies.  The first encourages development within the stasis, sustaining the life of a city.  The second promotes an overly consumptive development in order to expedite the expiration of the outdated city so that a new more relevant one can be re-born.  This polarity in urban planning strategies is the root of our research for Transportation Vehicles – our curatorial research mission for the Shenzhen Biennale.  Promoting the use of bicycles or public transportation is in essence a search for solutions to sustain the life of the existing city.  On the other hand, new developments for automobiles encourage the consumption of petroleum and expediting the oncoming of environmental and energy crisis.  The promotion of bio-diesel (fuel converted from waste cooking oil demonstrated in our conjoining exhibit, One Oil, Two Functions), for example, actually exacerbates the problems of automobile-centric transportation system. Critical conditions force an upheaval of existing infrastructure and a re-birth in the form of wholly new technologies. Of course, there is no simple way to decide between these two philosophies.  At any time, for any given city, debates over infrastructure systems like transportation only become more complicated after deeper examination of its context and many other factors.  The “correct” decision becomes ambiguous.

It is this complexity, visually reflected in our “Taxi Animation” video installation, which draws people’s interest in urbanism.  This animation is a 24-hour recording of 10 taxicab’s routes starting 6am on September 9th, 2007.  Using the GPS system installed in the taxicabs, we tracked their coordinates every 5 minutes.  From that data we were able to create a moving trajectory illustrating the movements of these taxicabs, displaying the speed, the location, and the time of day.  Observant viewers can derive the habits of Shenzhen citizens by tracking the movement of high-use areas throughout the day.  Studying the movement of nocturnal and day time routes can reveal not only traffic patterns, but also multi-layered narratives of Shenzhen’s lifestyle.

A dynamic visual animation, unbearable grid lock, inspiration for a more efficient transportation system… the various interpretations of the installation reflects the contrasting viewpoints on the topic of transportation vehicles.  While a metro passenger might aspire to buy a car for the commute, a member of organizations like “City on the Bicycle” (CoBChina) would aim to make cycling a more convenient mode of transportation.  In order for urban planning to accommodate all these opposing lifestyle aspirations discussion of the city’s goals must occur in public forum.

What we have to share are facts.  Some are simply statements on the current situation, some are projected statistics for the future if we continue our current transportation habits, and some are bits of suggestive knowledge that might affect the way we go about our transportation routine.  We do not attempt to make any conclusion.  The Biennale is not just an exhibition; it is a platform for public discussion and the instigation of public action.

One Oil Two Functions
Liang Jinyu/ Approach Architecture Studio

Anyone can turn waste cooking oil (vegetable, corn, canola, soybean, peanut…) and turn it into bio-diesel for their cars. This isn’t a new technology at all, in fact it’s already been quite refined (we’ve included instructions on this process that we used ourselves). The information is readily available online, just Google it! The ease in which waste cooking oil can be transformed into bio-diesel seems to be a secret, kept within the professional processing industry. For many, its news is taken with a bit of skepticism. So, we’ve taken up the experiment ourselves, collecting all the necessary materials and performing the process on film.

One litre of waste cooking oil goes for 2.5 Yuan. The materials needed for processing the oil comes out to about 2.5 Yuan making the total cost of raw materials 5 Yuan. There’s not much capital to be gained here, as 5 Yuan could get you 1 litre of petrol at the gas station. However, there is much to be gained environmentally. There’s a lot to be discussed about bio-diesel.

Why has this technology received such little public attention? Where does all the waste cooking oil go anyway?
Who will take on the unprofitable business of bio-diesel processing?
If the government would participate in encouraging the processing of bio-diesel, how would it interact with the current petrol distribution network?
